Didcot U11s Crowned League Pool 4 Champions After Nerve-Shredding Finale

The final match of the League Pool 4 competition couldn't have been set up any more dramatically. Going into the last fixture of the league games, Didcot U11s knew that victory over Wolvercote would give them an excellent chance of finishing top of the table. However, with rivals Steventon also in action against Oxford, the league title race was destined to go right down to the wire.

As news filtered through during the second innings that Steventon had beaten Oxford, the equation became crystal clear: only a Didcot win would be enough to secure first place. Every run, every ball and every cheer suddenly carried even greater significance.
In the end, our young cricketers held their nerve brilliantly to complete the job, finishing the season as League Pool 4 Champions with 44 points, three clear of second-placed Steventon on 41 points.

Wolvercote Post a Challenging 100
After winning the toss, Didcot elected to field first.

Wolvercote batted positively and posted a competitive total of 100 runs from their 16 overs, ensuring Didcot would have to work hard for the victory they desperately needed.

The Didcot fielders showed excellent commitment throughout. There were some sharp run-outs, Cherish Reddy Gopu and William Dagnell combined to run out R. Barrett, while Alex Freeman and William Dagnell teamed up for the dismissal of L. Parekh. Additional run-out success came from Alex Freeman, Jerry New and Hrim Panchal as Didcot kept applying pressure.

Two special moments in the field particularly caught the eye. Jerry New produced a brilliant boundary save, stopping a fiercely struck ball close to the bowler's end and preventing what looked certain to be four runs. Later in the innings, Shiv Panchal and James Lewis-Rush showed tremendous determination as they sprinted after a ball heading for the boundary, combining to stop it crossing and saving valuable runs for the team.

The bowling attack chipped away at key moments, with James Lewis-Rush claiming a wicket and Hrim Kapatel striking in the final over with a catch from Oscar Cox-Rogers to remove X. Frise. Wolvercote's innings was built around contributions from T. Chetty (13) and some useful late runs, but Didcot's energy in the field ensured the target remained within reach.

Calm Start Sets Up the Chase
Needing 101 to win and secure the league title, Didcot's chase began positively.

Jerry New got things moving immediately with a confident boundary from the opening over, helping settle any early nerves. Alongside Shiv Panchal, the pair rotated the strike well while capitalising on loose deliveries.

Shiv Panchal played an important hand, striking two excellent boundaries and keeping the scoreboard moving as Didcot built momentum. Jerry New added further boundaries and ensured Wolvercote could never completely take control. Both batters retired not out.

As the innings progressed, Didcot remained in touch with the required rate, but there was little margin for error. With Steventon's result now confirmed, players and supporters alike knew exactly what was at stake.

William Dagnell Delivers Under Pressure
The defining partnership came late in the innings.

With the title hanging in the balance, William Dagnell produced a superb innings full of composure and intelligent stroke play. After taking time to settle, he accelerated at exactly the right moment.

William Dagnell struck three crucial boundaries, including back-to-back fours in the 14th over that swung the momentum decisively in Didcot's favour. Supported well by Alex Freeman, who rotated the strike effectively and remained calm under pressure, Didcot edged ever closer to the target.

The tension around the ground was palpable, but William Dagnell's positive approach ensured Wolvercote never regained the initiative.

The winning moment eventually arrived in the 15th over as Didcot reached their target without losing a wicket, and sparked celebrations among players, coaches and families alike.
