Didcot CC vs Wolvercote CC

Gayle Dagnell31 May - 15:04

Wolvercote won by 8 runs

Wolvercote won the toss and chose to bat first, and from the very first over it was clear they intended to post something challenging. The run total after the first innings seemed like a tall order to beat, but Didcot stayed composed and worked hard to pick up runs through boundaries and smart singles, leading to a narrow win for Wolvercote.

First Innings
The opening spell set the tone: William Dagnell struck early with a clean bowled, while James Lewis Rush followed up with a wicket of his own, hitting the top of off stump with a textbook delivery. Hrim Kapatel added another breakthrough with a straight, skiddy ball that beat the bat, and Benedict Howman Bett kept things tight before removing V Patel. Another wicket fell thanks to sharp fielding from Isaac Keegan, who made a direct hit for a run-out.

Wolvercote’s middle overs were boosted by a burst of boundaries, but Didcot never let the innings get away. Shiv Panchal closed the innings with a dramatic final over full of pressure, extras, and finally a wicket to end the innings.

Despite a flurry of wides and no balls across the innings, Didcot restricted Wolvercote to a total that, while steep, felt chaseable.

Second Innings
The chase began with early intent. Jerry New played with calm assurance at the top of the order, striking clean boundaries and running sharply to give Didcot a solid platform. His innings brought confidence to team and set the tone for what followed.

Isaac Keegan added valuable runs, including a powerful four off Hamlyn, before Hrim Kapatel produced the standout batting performance of the day. His 19 from 25 balls, including four boundaries, anchored the innings and kept Didcot firmly in the hunt. Even as wickets fell at the other end, Hrim Kapatel’s composure held the chase together.

As the final overs arrived, the match was on a knife edge. Didcot needed boundaries, Wolvercote needed dot balls, and every player on both sides felt the pressure. With overs running out, Shiv Panchal and Christopher Bull tried to manufacture a late surge. Shiv Panchal struck a vital boundary off Hamlyn and later added another four off Stein, while Christopher Bull rotated the strike and kept Didcot in touch.
But Wolvercote’s bowlers held their nerve. Tight overs from Lyall, Hosking, and finally V Patel in the 20th over left Didcot just short of the target.

Despite a determined late push, Wolvercote held their nerve in the 20th over and closed out the match by just 8 runs.
Didcot may have fallen short, but the performance was full of heart, skill, and progress. With bowling depth, improving partnerships, and players stepping up across the team.

Player of the Match – Jerry New
A composed, technically assured innings at the top of the order. Jerry set the tone for the chase with confident stroke making, including five clean boundaries and excellent running between the wickets. His early momentum gave Didcot belief and structure, and his calm presence under pressure was exactly what the innings needed.

I-Scream Moment – Isaac Keegan
The moment that had the whole team on their feet came from Isaac Keegan. A sharp stop, a lightning quick gather, and a direct hit from close range produced a brilliant run out that completely shifted the energy in the field. It was pure commitment, and pure U11 magic.
