Match report written by Phil Bett
Didcot played an extremely entertaining but close match against their Goring on Thames opposition. Ultimately, it was the bowling and fielding units of both sides who shone in the match, leading to the closest possible margin of victory for Didcot – one run!
Didcot opened the batting with Christopher Bull and Arthur Dubovsky. Both batters looked to play their shots in a solid batting display but found the fielding side equal to their task. The Goring bowling attack maintained a disciplined line and length to the next two Didcot batters, William Dagnell and Max North. Once again, the fielders supported their bowlers, allowing only three runs off the bat. Oliver van Rooyen and Benedict Howman Bett were next into bat. Oliver played a shot for four from the batting tee following a wide delivery. Alex Freeman and Hrim Kapatel closed out the Didcot innings. Alex scored a powerful shot to record a boundary, only the second of Didcot’s innings – a statistic which illustrates the quality of Goring’s performance in the field.
Didcot’s final score was 28 from their 8 overs.
Hrim opened the bowling for Didcot, delivering the ball on an excellent line and length. Once again, the fielding side looked sharp, supporting the bowler to restrict the amount of runs conceded. Oliver took up the mantle for Didcot, taking a wicket with his first delivery! Tight bowling and fielding continued as Christopher started with three dot balls from his over. Arthur continued the disciplined bowling from Didcot, taking a wicket with his final delivery. A third wicket was taken by William in the next over to counter some scoring shots from the Goring batters. Max was next to bowl, allowing only 1 run off the bat from his over. Benedict received excellent fielding support from his teammates, who were able to grab two catches off his bowling, to return a double wicket maiden over. Hrim and Alex were the safe pairs of hands to pouch the catches to the delight of the Didcot supporters. The closest of matches was closed out by the bowling of Alex, who managed to restrict the Goring batters to just 3 runs off the bat.
Goring’s final score was 27 from their 8 overs.
Didcot win by 1 run.
Runs were at a premium for both sides, but Didcot’s 5 wicket haul was backed up by an excellent fielding display. A fine team effort to hold their nerve and collect the win. The team and coaches should be as proud of themselves as their supporters were.
